Who can weld cast iron?

As title says.

I need my flange adapter re-welded onto my manifold. Last time i had it done, it was a hack job that held up for longer than i expected, but it's starting to leak again.

The catch: I can't just take it to a welding place, because i can't afford downtime on the car. I've gotta be able to drive it to someone, take the manifold off after letting it cool enough to handle (about 2 hours), have it welded up (will have to remove the old weld shit), then reinstall, and drive home.

If anyone has the skills/equipment and a few hours free starting NEXT weekend, let me know if you can do it, and how much you want to do the job.

Spanx.

Give Drinan racing a call. Danny might be able to do it. He's on Gasoline alley.

FYI cast takes a specific filler rod and tends to crack unless cooled slowly in sand or kitty litter

You HAVE to pre heat it too. It is so porus that it is really hit and miss trying to get it to remain together without heating. Pops has welded it a ton. That filler is really salty too.

Researching on the forums for this car, these are the two ways that people have been doing it that have held up for years, that's good enough for me. I doubt i'll have this thing for a real long time.

Quote:
To weld steel to cast iron you need to preheat the cast iron ( no more than cherry red ) and preheat to steel to about 150deg c.
Then you need to MIG weld with a high nickle wire and with the amps turned way up so that you get good penetration into the cast iron.
Remember to reheat the cast iron between passes if process is slow.

Also the cast iron should be beveled to provide more penetration.
Or:

I have however had great success with flux core mig welding and cast iron, I am too cheap and lazy to heat the metal so I start with a high setting on the mig and tack the parts together, then I run a seam or two and turn up the amps and go over it again while hot at a setting high enough to cut through the first weld and properly penetrate the now hot iron. Even with mild steel to cast this has worked for me, I just focus most of the second run on the cast, binding the weld from the steel to the cast iron.

It's a steel flange, cast iron manifold. Actually... i need to look at it again. It may be steel to steel now that i think about it. Pretty sure it was a weld on flange adapter.
